Neuroplasticity

“There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn't.”

Are You Ready to Try a Different Approach to Recovery?

"When someone struggles with addiction, the brain uses this plasticity to create "superhighways" for cravings and habits. During recovery, we can use that same process to build new paths for self-control and joy."

Have you tried numerous rehabs, online and in person meetings, and feel like nothing is working? Perhaps it is time to try a new approach.  Perhaps it will make you more receptive to addiction therapy while at the same time help improve your energy level and overall sense of well being. Maybe it is time to re-train your brain...

Is the damage associated with substance abuse permanent? This is the big question. While long-term substance use can leave some "scars," the brain’s capacity for healing is remarkable.
  • Age Matters: Younger brains are generally more "plastic" and can rewire faster, but the adult brain remains capable of change throughout life.
  • Time is Key: Just as a forest path doesn't grow over in a day, neural pathways take time to fade. The longer you stay away from a substance and practice new habits, the weaker the "addiction roads" become.

For a long time, we viewed the addicted brain as a broken machine—once the gears were stripped, that was it. But thanks to a concept called neuroplasticity, we now know the brain is more like "mental play-dough" than a fixed computer chip. It is constantly changing, adapting, and—most importantly—rewiring itself based on our experiences. The key is what is our brain experiencing?

How Rewiring The Brain Can UNdo Damage and Heal Addiction

If you have ever felt like your own brain was working against you, please know this: It isn’t a lack of willpower, and it isn't a moral failure. Addiction is a powerful biological force that physically rewrites your internal map. But the same "wiring" system that led you here is also the very thing that can lead you out. This is the science of hope, and it is called neuroplasticity.

You Are Not "Broken"—You Are Adaptable. For years, we were told the adult brain was fixed in its ways. We now know that your brain is actually an incredible, living landscape that never stops changing. It is constantly building new roads and closing old ones.

Think of your brain’s reward system like a compass. Addiction is like a heavy magnet that has pulled your needle away from "True North"—away from family, joy, and peace. From the person you used to be—and forced it to point only toward a substance. But because your brain is "plastic" (meaning it can be reshaped), you have the power to move that magnet and recalibrate your compass!

Imagine your body's alarm is stuck on 'high alert' because of past trauma. Could past traumas be influencing your health in ways you haven't realized? Let's explore that together.-The Gupta Program

Resources about neuroscience & the brain

We have comprised a list of programs that focus on calming the nervous system and re-training the brain. Many of them talk about helping with chronic illnesses but they can also be extremely beneficial for trauma, anxiety and depression. Please do your own research to determine if this is the best course of action for you.

Gupta

https://www.guptaprogram.com/
The Gupta program focuses on brain re-training for chronic illnesses such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, anxiety from pain, and several others. It is a self-directed program that can calm the nervous system while re-training the brain. Anything that calms the nervous system can be beneficial for recovering from addiction.

Limbic System Rewire
https://www.limbicsystemrewire.com/
The Limbic System Rewire is a christian based neuroplasticity program. Brooklyn is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, Cognitive Behavioral Coach, and Registered Nurse who specializes in brain retraining. Nick is a Certified Christian Life Coach who also specializes in brain retraining.  Their System is designed to make you healthy and happy.

DNRS
https://retrainingthebrain.com
The Dynamic Neural Retraining System™ is a drug-free, self-directed program that uses the principles of neuroplasticity to help reverse limbic system impairment in the brain, and to regulate a maladapted stress response involved with many chronic illnesses such as Long Covid, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Lyme Disease, Food Sensitivities, Anxiety, Chronic Pain, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and many other conditions. It can be beneficial to individuals in recovery to calm the nervous system, making withdrawals and cravings more bearable.

Primal Trust
https://www.primaltrust.org/
Primal Trust Regulate™ is developed and implemented much differently than other programs. Dr. Cat has based her process on the foundational principles of the Polyvagal theory and the Cell Danger Response theory, and the program is taught through a trauma-informed lens. In fact, trauma processing is part of the program as well for those who need it, as chronic illness recovery involves attending to our inner wounding as well as our brain and vagus nerve function.

The Brain that retrains itself

Recovery is more than just "quitting"; it is a brave act of mental remodeling. When you engage in specific therapies and habits, you are physically thickening the parts of your brain that help you stay in control. Cognitive therapies strengthens the "CEO" of your brain (the prefrontal cortex). You regain the power to pause and choose, rather than react. Mindfulness quiets the "alarm center" (the amygdala) that triggers stress.Cravings lose their edge; you find a "quiet space" in the storm. TMS gently "reboots" sluggish circuits responsible for mood. A brighter outlook and more mental flexibility.mThe fog can lift. Your brain is waiting for you to give it the signal that it’s time to change. Your brain has the remarkable ability to heal itself. You aren't just stopping a habit; you are building a stronger, more resilient version of yourself from the inside out.
